New Rooftop Bar Now Open in Navy Yard: Top of the Yard
With a view of Nationals Park, Top of the Yard brings the DC bar scene to new heights.
It's 21 days into April and I'm just now finding out about a new rooftop bar that opened in my neighborhood at the beginning of the month. Just two blocks away from my house, at N Street SE and 1st Street SE, Top of the Yard is a rooftop bar inside the Hampton Inn with views of Nationals Park. They open at 5pm daily (earlier on game days) and have the tagline, "A Rooftop Bar with Natitude!"
In the Midwest, where I hail from, rooftop hangouts are a big thing. Here in DC, where we lack a lot of high rise buildings, rooftops are mainly used for pools and less for bars. That said, there are a number of good bars with roofs like Masa 14 or Rock and Roll Hotel, but this is a game-changer for bar culture in DC. As you may know, Wrigley Field rooftops in Chicago have become a (controversial) industry. It will be interesting to see what happens as more non-residential high-rises open in Navy Yard.
How fun will it be to toast to the Nationals from the sky?
The food is ballpark-inspired featuring hot dogs, soft pretzels and nachos with prices echoing those you'll find inside the park. The website appears to still be a work in progress with some unfinished sentences and Shutterstock photos. The Washington Post reports that the beer list is lackluster and similar to the stadium options. Still, the view alone will be worth a trip.
