Do you know this rooster?
Rooster Sighting in Southwest DC
I was walking my dog tonight at about 5:30pm on South Capitol Street Southwest when we encountered a stray rooster near the Randall Recreation Center.
I called animal control and they said they'd send an officer but didn't know when it would happen. I couldn't get close enough to pick him up and he eventually hopped under a locked gate near the rear of the rec center.
Stray Fowl in DC?
This past Saturday, I visited the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Poolesville, MD and learned that stray roosters and chickens are not uncommon in DC. (This article from 2012 says the Sanctuary doesn't take roosters anymore due to space issues.) There is a religious practice called "Santeria" where sacrifices take place at cemeteries with chickens and roosters. Roosters have also been found from illegal cockfighting rings and urban farming.
Is this a thing? Curious to know if this is more common than I realized.
Also, if you know where this rooster came from, please call DC animal control.
