Review for Top of the Yard: Good Brews and Rooftop Views (Dog-Friendly Too!)
Top of the Yard is like the Bullpen with better views. Come to have a beer and watch the baseball game without even buying a ticket. You can bring your dog too!
Last Thursday, there was a Nats game and the weather was perfect so I decided to kick off Memorial Day weekend a day early. Thursdays are usually when we go to the all-night happy hour at Scarlet Oak, but I have been chomping at the bit to check out Top of the Yard at the Hampton Inn & Suites Washington DC- Navy Yard. All I need to hear is "rooftop" and you can count me in.
I was even more excited when I heard from Kacy at Bad Sentences that the new bar in my neighborhood was also dog-friendly. George the coonhound needs to verify dog-friendliness independently so he came along.
Go on gameday.
Right now, Top of the Yard is the best kept secret the city and it was not crowded at all. A big selling point is the stellar views of the river, the Washington Monument, and of course, the Nationals stadium. You can really see the game from up there and it has a nice breeze, which is going to make it even more attractive during DC's hot summer days. It's a little far to watch the whole game but if you're like me, it's all about the idea of watching the game vs. actually watching the game.
Skip the cocktails.
These are not "craft" cocktails by any stretch of the imagination. I opted for the "Suicide Squeeze" (bitters, whiskey, maple, orange, lemon, club soda) because I like bitters. The bartender made the drink in a pint glass reading the menu upside-down over me. I had immediate pangs of regret. Needless to say, it was not worth the $11.
My friend got the "Triple Play Margarita" (blood orange juice, lime juice, cointreau, patron citronage) though they were out of Patron so they subbed Don Julio. They also didn't have blood orange juice and used regular OJ instead. This was also underwhelming.
Skip the food.
Well, I'm not actually sure if the food is good or not because the chef didn't show up for work that day. Despite the sign indicating there was brats and beers, there were no brats to be found. I'd probably make the trek down the Bullpen for a brat next time.
To-Do List for Next Time
On my next trip to Top of the Yard, I'll probably opt for a Bud Light to take in the experience in true baseball-fan fashion.
